THE PATHWAY TO CONSOLIDATING SOLUTIONS FOR THE UNDERDIAGNOSIS OF HISTAMINE IMBALANCE
DAO Equilibrium is open to learning about your studies, products, and innovations, with a commitment to providing cutting-edge curation for our expanding network of specialists and laboratories OUR MISSION AND THE URGENCY OF THE CHALLENGE DAO Equilibrium has established the fundamental mission of providing essential resources to combat the alarming global rate of histamine imbalance underdiagnosis, a condition that remains widely neglected despite its prevalence. We seek to fulfill this mission through the creation of a robust ecosystem based on three interconnected pillars: leading scientific communication, specialised technical education, and the distribution of innovative technological solutions. HISTAMINE IMBALANCE: A COMPLEX MULTISYSTEMIC CONDITION An imbalance in histamine metabolism triggers more than two hundred symptoms that are frequently mistaken for allergies. However, the crucial distinction lies in the absence of the classic IgE-mediated immune response. This condition, sometimes referred to as 'food hypersensitivity' or 'pseudoallergy', manifests through a spectrum of symptoms ranging from mild to severe. The impact is notably multisystemic, affecting the gastrointestinal tract, the neurological, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems, and the skin. In more advanced cases, the imbalance can lead affected individuals to develop complex conditions that drastically interfere with their daily activities, resulting in painful and disabling crises, or evolving into various chronic pathologies that are difficult to manage. ALIGNMENT WITH THE GLOBAL AGENDA: SDG 17 Our strategy is intrinsically aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17 - Partnerships for the Goals. To this end, we are actively building an ecosystem of collaborations that transcends borders and disciplines. We integrate key partners in two spheres: • Scientific and innovation partners: including internationally recognised organisations, universities, and Research, Development, and Innovation (R+D+i) centres. • Economic and solution agents: covering diagnostic and research laboratories, as well as manufacturers and producers of “free-from” foods and the nutraceutical industry. The central purpose of this cooperation is mutual strengthening and the efficient dissemination of technical knowledge and essential solutions so that we may, collectively, eradicate the global underdiagnosis of histamine imbalance by 2030. 360º EDUCATION: TRANSVERSAL KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER Recognising the scale of the challenge, we propose a 360º educational approach, aimed at transferring knowledge transversally to all parties involved in the food and health system: • Population: we adapt scientific content into accessible language, such as the material available in the DAO Equilibrium Facebook learning space. The goal is to develop an engaged community that can share enquiries and provide valuable feedback on solutions coming from academia and industry. • Academia: we encourage research and the updating of curricula with the latest evidence on the subject. • Industry: we offer support for the development of more effective products and diagnostic solutions. • Governments: we seek to influence the creation of public policies that recognise histamine imbalance as a public health challenge. THE SCALE OF THE CHALLENGE: DATA CORROBORATING THE URGENCY Food hypersensitivity derived from histamine imbalance is by no means a rare condition. Non-allergic food hypersensitivity, commonly known as food intolerance, affects between 1% and 6% of the global population. This range demonstrates the variation in estimates within medical literature, as the condition often simulates other disorders and its true occurrence remains uncertain due to a lack of standardised diagnostic criteria. According to the review by researchers Laura Maintz and Natalija Novak [1], approximately 1% of the population presents this condition. Meanwhile, the study conducted by Ying Zhao and collaborators [2] reports a higher prevalence, situated between 3% and 6%. The Brazilian Association of Allergy and Immunology [3] confirms this more recent statistic and highlights that histamine sensitivity – also called enteral histaminosis – is more frequent in children. Furthermore, researcher Pooja Toshniwal Paharia [4] observes that there is a higher recorded incidence among women. [1] The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2007. [2] Biomolecules, 2022. [3] Brazilian Association of Allergy and Immunology (ASBAI), 2024. [4] News Medical, 2025. The systemic impact and the intrinsic link to the deficiency of the diamine oxidase (DAO) enzyme, resulting in the inability to efficiently degrade exogenous histamine, as per the RUNA repository (2024), reinforce the need for an integrated approach. PARTNER ORGANISATIONS: THE STRENGTH OF MULTIDISCIPLINARITY Our collaboration ecosystem aims to eradicate the underdiagnosis of a metabolic syndrome that does not discriminate by age, ethnicity, or gender. Multidisciplinarity is the keyword that empowers our hub. We are actively seeking the integration of: • Economic agents. • Diagnostic and research laboratories. • Manufacturers and producers of “free-from” foods. • Universities and R+D+i centres. DAO Equilibrium is open to learning about your studies, products, and innovations, with a commitment to providing cutting-edge curation for our expanding network of specialists and laboratories.
