dao equilibrium scholarship 2026

Introducing the “DAO Equilibrium Scholarship”, our Corporate Social Responsibility initiative (CSR ).

For this first 2026 edition, our purpose is to democratise access to scientific knowledge, offering a programme that empowers professionals with tools to support the diagnosis of histamine imbalance and diamine oxidase (DAO) enzyme deficiency in humans.

Our social commitment

To achieve this goal, in 2026, we have allocated 0.5% of sales from DAO Equilibrium startup info-products to fund nine scholarships offered as professional extension courses.

The annual increase in the number of scholarships will be made possible through direct fundraising actions, formalised through Institutional Cooperation Agreements.

The global prevalence of food intolerance.

Non-allergic food hypersensitivity, commonly known as food intolerance, affects between 1% and 6% of the global population. This range reflects the variation in estimates in medical literature, as the condition often mimics other disorders and its true occurrence remains uncertain due to a lack of standardised diagnostic criteria.

According to the review by researchers Laura Maintz and Natalija Novak [¹], approximately 1% of the population presents this condition. Meanwhile, the study conducted by Ying Zhao and colleagues [²] reports a higher prevalence, between 3% and 6%. The Brazilian Association of Allergy and Immunology [³] confirms this more recent statistic, highlighting that histamine sensitivity is more frequent in children. Furthermore, researcher Pooja Toshniwal Paharia [⁴] observes that there is a higher incidence recorded among women.

Our action aims to have a positive impact on public health:

  •   Reducing patient waiting times.

Accurate diagnosis of a multisystemic metabolic syndrome is critical to starting treatment for affected individuals (of any age, ethnicity, or gender) at the primary care stage, before it becomes chronic.

  •   Reducing treatment costs.

Many affected people are referred, for over a year, to around ten specialists (GP, cardiologist, pulmonologist, endocrinologist, rheumatologist, neurologist, gynaecologist, physiotherapist, allergist, nutritionist), without obtaining an answer to their multiple symptoms.

  •   Fostering autonomy for those with metabolic imbalance.

We intend to empower health professionals to become agents of change in their local health systems, adopting educational and therapeutic nutrition strategies. The final beneficiaries, the population, will be guided on the value of nutrition as a tool for rebalancing health and wellbeing and social reintegration.

The programme

Audience

The target audience for the first edition of the “DAO Equilibrium Scholarship” is nutritionists from the nine Portuguese-speaking countries working in vulnerable communities.

Scientific support

The programme developed by DAO Equilibrium relies on scientific partnerships, both from internationally recognised organisations and specialists dedicated to the study of metabolism and immunology.

Sustainable Development Goals

DAO Equilibrium supports the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals - SDGs.

The DAO Equilibrium Scholarship aligns with SDGs 2, 4, and 17:

SDG 2  —  Zero hunger and sustainable agriculture

We align with this SDG by prioritising food security and precision nutrition. We adopt nutritional strategies aimed at eradicating malnutrition resulting from food hypersensitivity due to histamine imbalance, and we promote home gardening as a means to ensure access to low-histamine (antihistamine) foods.

SDG 4  —  Quality education

We align with this SDG by promoting excellence in scientific education and specialised technical training for health, nutrition, and food professionals. We strengthen knowledge in food and health sciences with programmes focused on managing the multisystemic metabolic syndrome caused by histamine imbalance, contributing to the eradication of global underdiagnosis.

SDG 17  —  Partnerships for the goals

We align with this SDG by fostering an ecosystem of collaborations and scientific partnerships with internationally recognised organisations, universities, and other economic agents, with the aim of strengthening cooperation and the dissemination of technical knowledge to eradicate global underdiagnosis.

“The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are our shared vision for humanity and a social contract between the world's leaders and the people. They are a to-do list for people and planet, and a blueprint for success”.
